Lila Downs "Shake Away"
Singer Lila Downs, up to now known for elegant ranchera ballads, has decided to shake up her music. She makes a break from her previous work to deliver an album with a more eclectic feel, with folk, blues, rock, slam, flamenco and Latin American song, composed in collaboration with her partner and sax player Paul Cohen. As always Downs is committed to using her music to throw some light on the socio-political situations of her two countries of origin, Mexico and the US. ‘Minimum Wage’ tells the story of migrants crossing the border in search of a skimpy dollar paycheck. She also looks inward, exploring the personal territories of heart and soul on the song Tierra de Luz, recorded with Mercedes Sosa. ‘Shake Away’ softly scatters some real gems.
